LIVE EVIL, the newest release from Dope Purple, is a live album recorded on June 14, 2025, at The Wall, Taipei. More than recitation, this album expands and mutates material from previous releases and features the previously unreleased track, “LxOxVxE.” Dope Purple is joined by special guest Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O., a central figure of Japanese psychedelic rock, reinterpreting our songs with sheets of blasting electric guitar.
Before the performance, Kawabata Makoto downed half a bottle of 118-proof Kinmen Kaoliang. Dope Purple was already in trance as we stepped on stage. What followed was savage. A sonic vortex dragged the audience from cosmic psychedelia into the depths of noise-rock hell.
To commemorate this performance for our European tour, I mixed the recordings of that night. Takeshi Yoshida, an audio engineer formerly associated with the legendary Japanese underground label P.S.F. Records, mastered the vinyl. The psychedelic inferno of June 14, 2025, is now resurrected in analog form. I hope listeners in other countries can experience the events of that night (volume set to max!!).

Dope Purple最新專輯《LIVE EVIL》是2025年6月14日在台北The wall舉辦的Dope Purple專場的現場錄音專輯。這專輯並不是單純重演過去專輯的樂曲，除了收錄未發表新歌「LxOxVxE」之外，還特別加入日本的迷幻大團Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. 吉他手的Kawabata Makoto（河端一），用爆音電吉他重新詮釋Dope Purple樂曲。當天表演前Kawabata Makoto喝了好多杯59度金門高粱酒，Dope Purple團員也是在於出神狀態直接進入演奏，因此這場現場整個樂團的表現特別兇猛，直接把觀眾從迷幻天團帶到噪音搖滾地獄。這次為了紀念Dope Purple的歐洲巡迴，我把這專場的錄音重新混音，並拜託曾經從事日本傳奇音樂廠牌P.S.F. Records錄音師的Takeshi Yoshida（吉田武司）處理母帶後製，把2025年6月14日的迷幻地獄再臨在黑膠之中，希望可以讓西方的朋友們體驗到當天的現場（記得把音量開最大！）。

I wrote the text below as an introduction to the performance last year. It also serves as an introduction to the album:

The music I pursue—Dope Purple’s psychedelic rock—is an “interaction of energy.” It is live music. This is why Dope Purple is centered on improvisation and live recording. Our last album, Children in the Darkness, is another live recording, from an open session at Revolver, Taipei in 2023.

I am often asked why we do not release a studio album. The question often implies that studio recordings are superior to live recordings. This is a reasonable assumption. In the studio, one can construct an ideal environment for recording and creation. Musicians don’t have to worry about unwanted noise or room interference. If they make mistakes, they can simply record again. For many musicians, a studio album may be the only way to achieve “perfect music.” Through controlled equipment and environments, they realize the musical ideal they carry with them. The studio allows presentation of “perfect music.”

My problem is this: I have no such “perfect music” within me. If I were to present with 100 percent fidelity the music of my mind, it would be absolutely empty.

I have never been a musician of purity. There is no “music” within me. I have instead primitive “energy.” Through the musical abilities of my bandmates, through the chaos of live performance, through the wonder of improvisation, and through the heat of the audience, I shape this energy into the semblance of music. So, when I speak of “my music,” I speak of energy without melody or rhythm. When I speak of “performance,” I speak of an interaction of energy within a shared space. My “perfect music” does not come from within; rather, it is a result of common resonance. Yet there is never completion. Each time, through different musicians, different environments, different audiences, and different physical conditions, different beauty emerges—beauty beyond perfection.

So, I persist in live performance and recording because interaction and resonance of energy are the true face of Dope Purple.

Dope Purple is a psychedelic rock band composed of Kozma Liu (guitar/vocals), Hung Jiun Chi (guitar), Wang Hu Ray (bass), Mark Chen (saxophone/synthesizers), and Speed Justin Tao (drums). To add complexity to interactions of energy, we sometimes feature special guest musicians.

For this performance, we are joined by a musician I deeply respect: Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple. I know many of you look forward to hearing his performance. But please do not forget that Dope Purple is not complete without another crucial element—you. You as well must join Dope Purple in forming a massive resonance of energy. You are not merely audience. You are our guest musician. You are our performer. You are our accomplice.

以下是去年我為了這專輯的現場寫的宣傳文章，同時這是對這張專輯對大家的聲明:

我所追求的音樂──Dope Purple的迷幻搖滾就是『能量的互動』，也就是現場音樂。這是為什麼Dope Purple一直都重視即興演奏與現場錄音。

上一張專輯《Children in the Darkness》也是我們2023年在台北左輪辦公開錄音現場的現場錄音。因為這樣，我常常被問過為什麼不發行錄音室專輯，提問者這麼說，感覺是在認為錄音室專輯比現場錄音更好。這蠻有道理的。畢竟錄音室可以約束完美的創作/錄音環境，樂手不用擔心樂器的雜訊，環境帶來的噪音，即使彈錯也可以重新錄音。我想，錄音室專輯應該是對不少音樂家來說，是一個唯一可以達成「完美音樂」的手段，他們的心裡有一個內在的「音樂」，而為了達成其「音樂」的具象化，音樂家需要的是可以控制/管理的錄音室設備。簡言之，音樂家透過錄音室呈現自己心中的「完美音樂」。然而，我的問題所在就是，我的心中沒有所謂的「完美音樂」，所以百分之百呈現我心中的「音樂」，那絕對會變成很空虛的。

我從來不是純粹的音樂家，我的心中沒有「音樂」，然而我的心中有最原始的「能量」，我只是把這「能量」靠團員的音樂才能，靠現場的混亂，靠即興演奏帶來的奇蹟，靠觀眾的熱量，勉強弄成音樂的形式而已。因此我講到我自己的「音樂」，那就是無旋律無節奏的「能量」。我講到「演奏」的時候，那就是現場空間的『能量互動』。我的完美音樂不是來自於內心的源頭，而是我們大家的「能量」一起共鳴出來的「結果」。甚至這裡沒有「完結」，每次樂手不同，環境不同，觀眾不同，身體狀態不同，就可以共鳴出不同的「美」，那是比完美更美的「美」。這是為什麼我一直都堅持現場演出與現場錄音，能量的互動與共鳴，這就是Dope Purple的真面目。

Dope Purple，是吉他手/主唱的我，吉他手的洪郡崎，貝斯手的王琥瑞，合成器的陳保明，鼓手的陶存孝來組成的迷幻搖滾樂團。為了帶來更複雜的能量互動，我們偶爾會追加「嘉賓樂手」。這次我們特別邀請了我最敬愛的音樂家──日本迷幻搖滾大團，Acid Mothers Temple 酸媽廟的河端一，我相信大家很期待他的演奏。然而大家請不要忘記，Dope Purple還缺一個重要因素，那就是你。不只是河端一，我希望你也跟著Dope Purple一起形成一個巨大的能量共鳴。你不是單純的觀眾，你就是我們的嘉賓樂手，你就是我們的演奏者，你就是我們的共犯者。下次現場，我們一起變成紫色的能量。
