“Membaladakan Keselamatan (Ballads for the Survivors)” is a hauntingly intimate acoustic compilation from Yogyakartan avant-garde duo Senyawa. Stripping away the feral electronics and industrial intensity that often define their sound, Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi revisit songs from across their past oeuvre, transmuting them into raw, meditative ballads that pulse with primal energy. This album lays bare the essential core of Senyawa’s music: the human voice and the elemental resonance of wood and string. A reimagination.
Born out of pandemic-era limitations, “Membaladakan Keselamatan” marks a quiet yet powerful shift in Senyawa's sonic journey. This ballad collection recontextualizes Senyawa’s work as a series of survival hymns — incantations towards the collapse. The album reinterprets key pieces into sparse acoustic arrangements, and reveals new atmospheres and emotions hidden beneath the original recordings. Wukir's custom-tuned guitar weaves melody and resonant textures that feel at once poetic and unnervingly immediate, while Rully's singing shifts between whispered prayers and visceral howls, with a clearly articulated, lyric-driven vocal, embodying both ritual and lament. Though more restrained in form, the album channels the same intensity — proving that Senyawa’s essence lies not in noise or effects, but in the deep musical dialogue between its two creators.
This vinyl edition also includes four previously unreleased tracks — percussive and vocal experiments that further unravel the duo’s mythic sonic language. Another exploration of Senyawa's restless spirit.
